Canton Chapter IMA member participates in annual Canton Repository Celebrity Spelling Bee
He didn’t win the contest, but Canton Chapter IMA member, Emil Alecusan, went up against 15 other contestants in the annual Canton Repository Celebrity Spelling Bee on September 6th.
Held at the Canton Palace Theatre, the event is a fundraiser that benefits the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. According to a Canton Repository newspaper article, the contestants raised $12,450 this year for the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank.
The event started with common and easy-to-spell words for the contestants. However, Emil went out when he misspelled the second word he was offered, “havarti,” which is a type of cheese. “I should have thought a little more,” said Alecusan, who is chief financial officer for Brewster Cheese. “I should have taken a couple more seconds to think about it.” But it was not a bad night for Alecusan as he raised the most money of all the 16 spelling bee contestants.
The Canton Repository went on to say that the one who might have been the star of the event was the “expert,” Snehal Choudhury, a 14-year-old Jackson High School freshman. Choudhury was summoned to center stage frequently to spell some of the more difficult words as contestants called for her help. Choudhury represented Stark County in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Maryland earlier this year.
CONGRATULATIONS, EMIL!!
