Message from the President

Dear Canton IMA Members,

Can you believe Thanksgiving has already come and gone?! Are you ready for Christmas dinners, lights, and SNOW (I’m pretty sure I saw some before Thanksgiving)?

Most importantly, have you met your CPE requirements for the year? I hope you have, but in case you are a procrastinator like me, use the IMA as your source! First, come to our final Technical Session of the year to earn two hrs of CPE presented by Lori Goodnight from the Bureau or Workers Comp and Happiness Coach Jim Smith (yes, it will be worth coming just to find out what a happiness coach does!). Second, visit and go to the Learning Center to attend free online webinars or purchase CPE (even meeting the ethics requirement) at significant member discounts!

We’ve already had a great start to the year, learning about the creative business model employed by Flight Test (and flying model planes!), great career advice for students and young professionals provided by Progressive at Student Night, and an in depth look at our Social Security system. We look forward to seeing you at sessions throughout the rest of the year which will cover tax updates, tax strategies employed by “mineral rights millionaires”, and a local mortgage lending update.

New news must also include the announcement that in place of our 50/50 drawing, for which you had to purchase a ticket each month, we will now automatically be entering everyone in a drawing for a $25 restaurant gift card! You have to attend and you’ll have pretty good odds!

Happy Holidays!

Jesse Allison, CPA, President

IMA/NetSuite Survey Reveals Migration to Cloud for Integration is Inevitable and Preferred

To help accounting and finance leaders better understand business obstacles and the ways that companies are overcoming them to elevate the role of finance, a new research report titled “Barriers to Change in Information Technology Decisions” details what triggers change-in-information technology decisions. The report focuses on those decisions related to integrated information systems, and investigates what barriers are present when implementing enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. The report was sponsored wit NetSuite Inc. (NYSE: N), the industry’s leading provider of cloud-based financials and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software suites, and is available on IMA’s website.

Among its key findings, the survey of more than 200 CFOs, controllers, directors, and accounting managers revealed that:

  • Fewer companies (32%) are using spreadsheets to achieve integration among their various information systems, down from 68% in 2013.

  • The biggest overall barrier to digital transformation was a lack of support from top management. Only about half of the CFOs said that investment in IT and systems receives strong active support from top management.

  • The biggest technical barrier, according to more than 80% of the CFOs, is the total costs of systems.

“As a result of globalization, technological advancements, and changes in the business environment, companies have adopted innovative business models, restructured their day-to-day operations, and relied much more on integrated systems and IT outsourcing. Although companies still have a long way to go to achieve integrated systems, the trend is headed in that direction,” said Kip Krumwiede, CMA, CPA, Ph.D., author and IMA director of research.

This is the fourth report of the IMA/NetSuite “Rising to the Challenge” research series, which was started in 2012. Previous research reports in this series, published in 2012, 2013, and 2014 have focused on “Productivity in Accounting and Finance Organizations,” “Achieving Real-time Visibility across the Organization,” and “Evolving Role of the Controller.” These are also available on IMA’s website.
