Welcome Mid-Eastern Ohio Chapter!

From the Chair of IMA, William F. Knese, CMA, CFM, CPA:
Growing Your Career

This is my final Perspectives as your Chair. In previous columns, I’ve shared thoughts on management accounting, ethics, continuing education, leadership, networking, volunteer service, and other subjects relevant to your career. This month I’d like to explore the role that IMA (Institute of Management Accountants) and the CMA (Certified Management Accountant) certification play in your career story.

As the association of accountants and financial professionals in business, IMA is the most respected name in the profession, committed to helping you—and our more than 70,000 other members worldwide—strengthen your financial management skills, power your organization’s performance, and grow your career potential.

One of the best ways to grow that potential is through the CMA, the “gold standard” of management accounting credentials that can take you to the next chapter of your career story. CMA certification is:

•  Prestigious—It’s a self-selected credential that you can earn only through testing.

•  Rigorous—The CMA exam, as well as its education, job experience, and annual continuing education requirements, establishes and maintains the strength of your certification.

•  Empowering—Your credential provides you with an opportunity to become a leader in your profession. Volunteer service at many different levels of the organization— local, regional, national, and global—can help to strengthen your leadership skills and provide experience with problem solving, consensus building, public speaking, and much more.

•  Evidence of competency—The CMA attests to your proven on-the job skills. It measures what matters: those skills that are most in demand by today’s top employers.

Professional certification also makes a difference in earnings. IMA’s most recent Annual Salary Survey, published in this issue of Strategic Finance, confirms that, on average, CMAs in the United States earn about 36% more and CMAs in the Middle East, Asia Pacific, and Europe earn about 59% more in annual compensation than their noncertified peers. Year after year, these surveys affirm the strong career growth and greater earning power for credentialed management accountants.
